who is fermenting today?

a budding ginger bug for ginger beer (no bubbles yet)

the beginnings of a SCOBY (symbiotic colony of bacteria and yeast) for kombucha

the wild yeast starter, nearly a month old now, working its magic on some dough


  1. I'll bet you did really well in chemistry.

  2. My red ale will be ready to bottle on Saturday. :)

    Then a batch of stout, or maybe IPA, haven't decided yet.

  3. Ahh that's so awesome. I still haven't sprung for a basic brewing kit yet. I'm trying to decide if I should just go the plastic buckets route or get a carbuncle. What do you do?

  4. I have a hybrid of those. My primary fermenter is food grade 10 gallon plastic bucket, but my secondary is a 6 gallon all-glass (read super heavy) carboy. I may upgrade from the plastic bucket at some point, but it is awfully convenient at the moment. I'm not sure how well a glass carboy would do as a primary although I'm sure it could be done. Might be tough to keep happy during vigorous fermentation.

  5. Hahaha. Uhhh...I was trying to think of the name for those big glass containers. How I came up with carbuncle instead, I'm not really sure. A carboy is definitely better than a carbuncle any day.
